Puppy Preschool

We invite you to bring your puppy to our Puppy Pre-school Course at Monash Veterinary Clinic. It is an enjoyable way to encourage early socialization with both other dogs and humans, introduce basic training, and help with educating both owners and puppies.

Many behavioural problems seen in dogs can be due to lack of proper socialisation and training in the first critical weeks of their life. With this course, you can feel confident that you will be giving your puppy a good head start in his or her development into a well-behaved and confident adult dog.

The "critical period" for socialisation, handling and training is between 6 and 16 weeks of age. During this time, your puppy will retain everything it experiences and learns, which is why it is important to expose him or her to as many novel things as possible in a non-threatening and safe environment. This early socialisation period is very important, as even a small amount of experience at this age can have long lasting effects on your dog. For example, puppies that are not exposed to other dogs (or people) during the early stages of their life are more likely to develop aggressive or fearful responses to other dogs (or people) later on, just as puppies that are not regularly exposed to new things can develop phobias later in life.

The course consists of three 45-minute evening classes. Puppies aged between 8 and 13 weeks of age having had their first vaccination one week prior to the commencement of the class are eligible to start the course. They are run at the clinic in a relaxed and informal setting by one of our senior veterinary nurses. The environment emphasises that learning can be fun and stress free for both the owners and their puppies. Your questions and concerns will be answered to the best of our ability, to give you the best possible advice at the start of your new journey. Family members are more than welcome and encouraged to attend, however, numbers may be limited per family depending on the size of the class.

Treats and water are provided during the class, but please wait until after the class to feed your puppy their dinner. All you need to bring is your puppy on a lead along with their vaccination certificate. However, if your puppy has been unwell, please notify the clinic prior to the class and keep them at home.

Upon completion of the course, puppies will receive their Graduation Certificate, puppy packs, and additional take-home information for you, including details for further obedience training courses.
