Levels of Care

At Monash Veterinary Clinic we offer special levels of care for routine dentals and desexings. Below is an explanation of why we recommend them and what is involved.

Levels of care available

Level 1: Includes Pre-anaesthetic bloods, intravenous fluids and take home pain relief medication.

Level 2: Includes Pre-anaesthetic bloods or intravenous fluids and take home pain relief medication

Level 3: Take home pain relief medication

Pre-anaesthetic bloods

Pre-anaesthetic blood tests gives us a large volume of useful information regarding organ function, particularly the kidneys and liver. It will often help identify disease before it would otherwise be picked up, and enables us to treat appropriately, including allowing us to alter the anaesthetic to make it appropriate for your pet’s specific condition.

Some diseases that may show up on PAB’s

• Kidney disease
  
• Liver Disease
  
• Anaemia (low RBC’s), e.g. from haemorrhage, gut disease, trauma or low iron levels.
  
• Diabetes
  
• Dehydration
  

Some good indications for PAB’s

• First anaesthetic
  
• Older animal (>7 years of age)
  
• Existing medical problems
  
• Specific breeds (e.g. Miniature schnauzers). A vet at their initial puppy vaccinations can broach these considerations with the owner.
  

Intravenous fluids

Intravenous fluids (IVFT) helps maintain the body’s normal function and reduce it going into shock.

Benefits of using IV fluids:

• Helps to maintain the body’s normal function and blood pressure
  
• Helps quicken recovery
  
• Helps circulate oxygen
  
• Supports organs that are metabolising or affected by anaesthetic
  

Pain relief medication

Like us receiving pain relief after a surgical or hospital procedure, we can apply this same principal to our pets, allowing them to be comfortable days after surgery. Their medications are different to ours, so please do not give anything you have in the drug cupboard at home without checking with us first. You could actually cause more harm than good.

A pain relief injection is given while your pet is in our care which usually lasts for 24 hours. The additional medication you take home will help your pet feel more comfortable in the first few days which speeds up recovery and wound management.
